OMEP-Hong Kong has established a working group since 2005 to take the lead in promoting the education of Chinese culture in Hong Kong early childhood settings. We have continuously organised programmes and events that strengthened early childhood educators’ and young children’s understanding of the motherland. Earlier, we assembled our work and experiences into a book, namely Passing on the Torch, all begin from early childhood education: A collection of teaching materials on promoting the understanding of China. Following the increasingly active and frequent economic and socio-cultural cooperation between Hong Kong and the mainland, there is an urgent need for the Hong Kong society in general to know more about Chinese culture and experiences. Therefore, OMEP-Hong Kong launched a new project, entitled “Early Childhood Teacher Training on Traditional Chinese Culture”, in December 2018. The project was fully sponsored by the Quality Education Fund (QEF) of the Education Bureau.
The overarching goal of the QEF project was to increase the knowledge of traditional Chinese culture among educators, young children, families, and communities, thereby building their sense of Chinese identity in the long run. By enhancing the training of cultural practices of teachers, developing exchange platforms, and improving teaching resources, the project aimed to advance the learning and teaching of traditional Chinese culture in Hong Kong kindergartens. With the collaborative effort of the Executive Committee Members of OMEP-Hong Kong and the participating kindergartens, we successfully organised a series of training activities to help teachers integrate essential elements of the Chinese culture into many creative and exciting class activities, as shown below.
